Good Sources for Writers on the World Wide Web

CAUTION: Please understand that the Internet is an "open forum," in other words, anyone can publish anything they want without censorship. This can be both good and bad. It means that some of what you find (especially on controversial topics) may have been put there by someone with his own personal agenda. No one censors the Internet to see if the stuff there is TRUE, so always be skeptical. If outrageous statistics or "facts" are given, be sure they are verifiable before relying on them to support your research paper. If no author or source of the information is given, be especially suspicious. Never assume that information is true, just because you found it on the Internet.
- Park University Library - Log in with your student OPEN password and use the electronic catalog, electronic databases, etc. A great place to begin any search!
- Ebsco Host - One of the best research tools around is Ebsco Host, available in our computer labs and in the library. It is a source of articles from respected magazines of all kinds. You can search by subjects. No need for an address: just click on the icon on our machines.
- UMI ProQuest Periodicals - Another electronic index of magazine articles, but even more extensive than Ebsco. You can access it through the Online Catalog in the Park Library.
- Library of Congress Digital Library - You will find lots of good material here, including history, a summary of current legislation in Congress, a Library of Congress catalog search, and information on legal topics like Copyright Law.
- Kansas City Public Library Home Page - This is a great source of local information, including a search engine for magazine and newspaper articles, a link to the Kansas City Star, online exhibits, KidLinks, government information, and even a library card application. If you find a book you need, you can tell our librarians and they can have the book inter-library loaned to you, which may take a while. If you have a KCPL card, you can go to a KCPL branch to pick up the book.
- Mid Continent Public Library Home Page - Through this page you can find books in any of the 26 MCPL branches, including the Parkville branch, which is within two miles of the campus (behind Sonic, just off 9 Highway). To search the card catalog, click on "Adult Programs," then choose "Library Catalog." If you already have an MCPL card, you can request the book electronically, and it will be sent to the Parkville branch (or any other branch you specify). If you don't have a card, you can still browse the catalog by clicking on "guest." You can search by author, title, or subject. It will show you how many copies of the book they have, what branches have it, and whether it is available. Books you find here can be inter-library loaned to the Park library, but it may take several days. Besides the card catalog, you can also link to other MCPL services and resources.
