Why Study Public Policy?

A public policy certificate enables you to build a strong foundation in how public policy is developed, implemented, and evaluated in the United States. The program equips students—especially those in public-sector or nonprofit roles—with practical knowledge in areas like social policy, disaster management, and local government decision-making. The Graduate Certificate in Public Policy also offers a flexible path toward a Master of Public Administration (MPA), as all four certificate courses count toward the MPA’s public policy concentration. This streamlined design allows students to build expertise in policy while making efficient progress toward an advanced degree.

What You’ll Learn

  • The public policy certificate explores how disaster-related policies are developed and implemented across local, state, and federal levels. You’ll learn how emergency managers can act as policy advocates and influence disaster response planning and legislation.
  • In the online public policy certificate program, you will study how to evaluate the effectiveness of public organizations and their policies. Emphasis is placed on using performance data, understanding environmental impacts, and applying evaluation results to guide future public sector actions.
  • You will gain insight into how public policies are created to meet community needs in areas such as health, employment, and crime prevention. The program also highlights the importance of community values, inter-organizational collaboration, and global perspectives in local policy-making.
  • The public policy certificate program’s courses provide a deep understanding of the role of policy in shaping communities and public institutions. You’ll develop critical thinking skills for assessing social policies, evaluating organizational outcomes, and leading with ethical and evidence-based approaches.
  • You’ll design a simulated local government using urban policy and public administration principles. This hands-on project teaches graduate students how to apply strategic planning, infrastructure development, and citizen engagement to create effective public management solutions.
